Kīlauea is one of the world's most active volcanoes, but volcanic activity changes over time. When lava is visible, we'll take you to the best safe viewing location available. If surface lava is not visible, you'll still experience an active volcanic landscape, learn about ongoing volcanic activity, and visit remarkable locations while gaining a deeper understanding of the geology and Hawaiian cultural significance of Kīlauea. Often, glow is at least seen from the vents and can provide stunning photos as keepsakes! 

Sunrise provides the best overall experience. The park is quieter, temperatures are cooler, parking is easier, and we often enjoy viewing areas with far fewer (or no) people. Early morning light also creates beautiful photography opportunities, and you'll still have the rest of the day to continue exploring Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. 

Absolutely. Many of our guests stay in Kona and tell us afterward it was the highlight of their trip. Because the tour begins before sunrise, traffic is typically light, allowing you to enjoy the experience early and still have plenty of time for the rest of your day. Also, coming from an area with a later timezone, if often feels later than it is! If you choose not to drive that morning, you can book a night near the park as well.

This is an easy walk of approximately 2 miles round trip over mostly paved paths with some uneven volcanic terrain. Anyone comfortable walking at a relaxed pace should enjoy the experience.

Not at all! We will guide you through simple poses and help you look natural. Most guests tell us they normally don't enjoy having their photo taken, but end up loving the results. 

Wear comfortable clothing suitable for walking and cool morning temperatures. Layers are recommended since temperatures can change quickly before sunrise. Bright, solid colors often stand out beautifully against the dark volcanic landscape. Avoid busy patterns if possible. Every lighting condition is different, but clothing that contrasts with the environment generally photographs best. 

Yes. Black can create dramatic and timeless images, especially for silhouette photography. However, if the morning is darker than expected or volcanic glow is subtle, brighter colors may stand out more. Red is a fantastic choice. Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Yes. Early mornings in Volcano are often cool, and temperatures can feel chilly before sunrise. A jacket or light sweatshirt is recommended. Layers also give you flexibility if conditions change during the tour. 

Small props are welcome if they are easy to carry during the hike. Cameras, hats, or a small umbrella can add personality to your photos. We recommend avoiding large props that may be difficult to hike with or distracting in the natural landscape. 

Every morning is unique. Cloud cover, moonlight, volcanic glow, weather, and volcanic activity all influence the final images. While every gallery is professionally edited, no two tours produce exactly the same photographs—and that's part of what makes each experience special. 

Clouds often create some of the most dramatic skies and colorful volcanic glow. Some of our favorite photographs have been taken on mornings with partial cloud cover. 

Beautiful photos are still possible. The volcanic landscape, sunrise colors, steam, silhouettes, and dramatic scenery provide incredible photography opportunities regardless of visible surface lava. I can also edit glow in if desired.

Absolutely. Photographers of all skill levels are welcome. Feel free to bring your camera and ask questions along the way. 

Absolutely! If there's a particular pose, idea, or special moment you'd like captured, let us know during the tour and we'll do our best to make it happen. 

Your confirmation email will include detailed meeting instructions. We meet at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park before sunrise, and from there we'll begin our adventure together. 

Meeting times vary throughout the year to coincide with sunrise. Your exact meeting time will be provided after booking but is around 4:30am, give or take.

We recommend bringing:

• A jacket or sweatshirt

Dress in layers. Early mornings in Volcano can be surprisingly cool, especially before sunrise, but temperatures often warm up as the morning progresses. However, on rainy and windy days, it is quite cold! Better to have more than you need, than not enough.

Volcano is a rainforest, and light rain is part of the experience. Tours continue in most weather conditions, and cloudy or misty mornings often create some of the most beautiful volcanic scenery and photographs. Old Hawaiian proverb, "if you don't do things in the rain....you don't do things". We provide ponchos when needed.

No. The experience is about much more than seeing surface lava. Every tour includes volcanic landscapes, fascinating geology, Hawaiian cultural storytelling, and professional photography. While visible lava is always exciting, every morning offers something unique. 

Much of our walk follows paved pathways, although some areas may include uneven volcanic terrain. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. 

Many expectant mothers have enjoyed the tour. Because every pregnancy is different, we recommend consulting your healthcare provider if you have any concerns about walking approximately two miles over uneven terrain. 

Cell service is generally available around the meeting area, but coverage can vary throughout the park depending on your carrier. 

Please contact us as soon as possible if you're delayed. Because the tour begins before sunrise and follows a schedule, we may not be able to wait for late arrivals. Refunds are not given due to being late and missing the tour.

No. Removing rocks, plants, or other natural or cultural resources from Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is prohibited. We encourage visitors to leave everything as they found it so others can enjoy the same experience. Additionally, culturally, the rocks are dried lava, which are Pele's body and should never be removed from the island.
